Qin Bin, a physician at Xi'an Jiaotong University's Second Affiliated Hospital of Gastroenterology, and Mutingui, a professor at the Institute of Space Optics at Xi'an Jiaotong University, developed a snapshot polarization scattering spectrometry (PLSS). The study was published in Laser & Photonics Reviews.
Based on the previous research, a new simple snapshot single optical path PLSS endoscopic system is presented for the first time, consisting of only one illuminated fiber optic path and one collecting fiber optic path. A spectral modulation module consisting only of a single multi-stage delay and a linear polarizer is proposed for the first time, and integrated into the distal end of the endoscope to encode the polarized scattering spectrum. Subsequently, the modulation spectrum is decoded using a priori constrained compression sensing algorithm, and the Stokes spectrum of single scattered light is separated from the multiple scattering spectrum. Decoded Stokes spectra can be used to iteratively reverse the size distribution of the nucleus, but the iterative process is time-consuming. A new cancer diagnostic indicator, WSSL (Weight of Single Scattered Light), has been proposed. Compared with traditional iterative methods, WSSL calculated directly eliminates complex model inversion steps, making diagnosis faster, more accurate and more suitable for clinical environments.
The team first proposed a snapshot-based single-optical PLSS in vitro system and validated the feasibility of the method, followed by a data-driven Bayesian neural network framework to accelerate inversion of the nuclear size of early cancer cells.
Gastrointestinal cancer is one of the major health challenges and causes of death worldwide, and early detection and treatment are critical to improving survival rates. Early cancers usually exhibit abnormal nucleus morphology, but no instrument is currently available to detect the nucleus directly in vivo. This technology solves the problem of traditional PLSS endoscope system to some extent, and brings hope to realize the pixel-level PLSS imaging endoscope technology.
