The team recruited 288 patients who had gum disease and received ablation therapy for atrial fibrillation.Of these, 97 received treatment for gum disease three months later.
During the two-year follow-up period, 24% of the participants relapsed, but among patients treated for gum disease after ablation, the likelihood of relapse decreased by 61%.
If the patient's gum disease is severe, the risk of atrial fibrillation is higher.
Miyauchi said that if gum tissue becomes inflamed or even ulcerated, bacteria and inflammatory immune proteins enter the bloodstream, which may affect the heart.
The researchers also measured inflammatory protein levels in subjects' blood prior to ablation and found elevated levels of inflammatory protein in subjects with severe gum disease.Miyauchi said that the higher the antibody levels of gum disease-related bacteria, the higher the recurrence rate of atrial fibrillation.
The team encourages patients with atrial fibrillation to treat gum disease if necessary.This can be prevented by brushing your teeth with fluorine-containing toothpaste at least twice a day, flossing or dental stick daily, and regular dental visits.
Nieca Goldberg of New York University's Grossman School of Medicine noted that the study was relatively small, with only 97 participants receiving treatment for gum disease."Nevertheless, it does lay the groundwork for future research in this area."
