Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells are a layer of tissue behind the photosensitive retina that supports metabolically active retinal neurons.When RPE breaks down, many retinal diseases occur.
Speckles were observed in RPE cell imaging with AO-OCT.Speckles interfere with AO-OCT just as clouds interfere with aerial photography.At a given moment, some parts of the image may be obscured.
To this end, the research team developed an AI-based parallel discriminator generative adverbial network (P-GAN) technology.By providing nearly 6,000 images of human RPE collected by AO-OCT to the P-GAN network, the team trained AI to recognize and restore cellular features that are spot-shielded.
When tested on the new image, P-GAN successfully removed the RPE image spots, restoring the cell details.The researchers estimated that P-GAN reduced imaging acquisition and processing time to 1 percent.The new technology can show 3D retinal structure at cell-level resolution, amplifying early signs of disease.
