DNA methylation is a form of chemical modification on DNA that can affect gene expression activity without altering the sequence of genes, known as epigenetics.DNA methylation levels gradually increase during aging, reflecting the physiological stress accumulated by the body over time.Researchers have developed multiple epigenetic clocks to assess a person's biological age by DNA methylation levels.Some studies have found that biological age is a better predictor of health problems such as cardiovascular disease and dementia than a person's actual age.
Previously, Vadim Gladyshev, a biomedical scientist at Harvard Medical School, said, "Unlike chronological age, biological age is very flexible, it is a fluid parameter that can fluctuate up and down."Last year, his team published a study in Cell Metabolism pointing to a decline in biological age after pregnancy in mice and suggesting that humans may have similar effects.The cessation of several other stress conditions also reverses biological age.
O'Donnell's research confirms Gladyshev's findings.The study found a significant positive correlation between pregnancy status and stage and biological age, with maternal biological age increasing by about 2 years in just 18 weeks from early pregnancy to late pregnancy.However, three months after delivery, there was a significant reversal of maternal biological age, two to three times the increase in biological age from early to late pregnancy.
The study also found that not everyone gets the same degree of recovery after giving birth.People who are obese before pregnancy have a lower degree of biological age recovery after childbirth, and the degree of biological age recovery at 3 months is significantly smaller than that of people with normal weight.
The researchers also analyzed the relationship between breastfeeding and accelerated ageing in pregnancy, with those exclusively breastfed having the highest degree of postpartum biological age recovery compared to those fed with powdered milk or mixed feeding.
Still, O'Donnell said, "We didn't measure the biological age of the participants before pregnancy, so we can't claim it as a rejuvenating effect."But these data are very enlightening and I hope to follow up on this research in the future.
