To learn more, David Atance del Olmo and colleagues at the University of Alcala in Spain analyzed mortality data for 194 countries from 1990 to 2010.These countries can be divided into five groups based on their life expectancy trends.
People with the highest average life expectancy come from countries with the highest incomes, such as Australia, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and the rest of Western Europe.The only populations with the lowest life expectancy are Rwanda and Uganda.
Researchers comparing life expectancy between men and women in these countries found that Rwandan and Ugandan men experienced the largest increases in life expectancy.Their average life expectancy was only 30.85 years in 1990, an increase of 14.37 years in 2010 to 45.22 years.Among women in these countries, life expectancy increased by only 0.94 years, from 50.37 to 51.31 years.
Among those with the highest life expectancy, the average difference in life expectancy between men and women in 1990 was 4.84 years, with women living longer.In 2010, that number dropped slightly to 4.77 years of age.Researchers expect this gap to continue to narrow, reaching 3.4 years by 2030.
The team observed the same trend in the other three groups of countries.Although the researchers only looked at the data up to 2010, they expect a similar trend to continue to this day.However, they acknowledge that the new coronavirus may have affected human life expectancy in general, and men in particular.
