2024-01-09 12:32:49 | onclick: | Children who watch TV are more likely to have developmental behavior problems.

When a child watches TV or videos, they become particularly "good", so allowing children to watch TV or videos has become a common choice for many parents to coax their children.
Parents just to save their worries, but ignore the potential harm caused by watching TV and videos often.A study published Jan. 8 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics suggests that infants and toddlers who often watch TV or video may be more likely to exhibit atypical sensory processing behaviors.
Sensory processing skills reflect the body's ability to respond effectively and appropriately to information and stimuli received by sensory systems, such as young children hearing, seeing, touching and tasting things. So, what is atypical sensory processing?
This behavior often takes three forms. The first is a total disregard for what's going on around them, so these children often act more withdrawn and indifferent to everything. The second preferred to seek more intense sensory stimuli, such as climbing high to perform some dangerous behavior, or to smell an object too much. The third is over-sensitivity, such as excessive anxiety when stimulated by noise or strong light.
The study found that children who regularly watched TV at the age of two were more likely to develop this atypical sensory processing behavior, and by 33 months they were less sensitive to external stimuli, such as when someone called their name.
The study adds to a growing number of health and developmental outcomes associated with screen time in infants and toddlers, including language retardation, autism spectrum disorders, behavioral problems, sleep disorders, and attention problems.
"Our study may have significant implications for ADHD and autism, as atypical sensory processing is more common in these populations."Karen Heffler, the paper's corresponding author and associate professor at Drexel University School of Medicine, said.
"Considering that prolonged screen viewing is associated with an increasing number of developmental and behavioral problems, there may be improvements in young children who exhibit these symptoms by reducing screen time, supplemented by sensory processing exercises provided by occupational therapists."Heffler said.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) discourages infants under 18 to 24 months of age from looking at screens, but video chat is OK because young children benefit from this interaction. The AAP recommends that the time limit for children aged 2 to 5 years to use digital media should be limited to no more than 1 hour per day.
"Parental companionship and education are key to reducing or even avoiding screen time for children under two years of age."David Bennett, a professor at Drexel University School of Medicine and a senior author, said.
Researchers believe that while the current paper focuses only on watching TV or video, rather than looking at smartphones or tablets, it does provide some of the earliest data linking infants and toddlers to atypical sensory processing behaviors.
