Concussions and more severe traumatic brain injuries increase the risk of dementia, a new study in the United States has found.
Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury.The study, conducted by the University of California, San Francisco, team of U.S. veterans, found concussion patients had an increased risk of developing dementia, whether unconscious or not.
Specifically, unconscious concussion patients increased their risk of dementia to 2.36 times, unconscious concussion patients to 2.51 times, and moderate to severe traumatic brain injury to 3.77 times.
The team extracted data on nearly 360,000 patients from two U.S. databases: all veterans who suffered traumatic brain damage while serving or not serving in the military; and veterans who suffered traumatic brain damage from bomb shocks in Iraq or Afghanistan.The average age of the patients was 49.
The research paper was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and Journal of Neurology on the 7th.Professor Deborah Barnes, lead author of the paper, said the results from the two databases were similar, suggesting that conventional concussions, like war concussions, were associated with dementia risk.
Senior author Professor Christine Yaff said brain damage accelerates neurodegenerative disease, possibly because it causes abnormal protein accumulation, resulting in neuronal death, or trauma that makes the brain more vulnerable to other injuries or aging.
