In order to make up for the lack of understanding of instruments this semester, I took three instrument-related courses: Biophysical Experiment Techniques and Methods, Modern Analytical Chemistry Principles and Techniques, and Instrument Analysis in Biology.I didn't understand well because I didn't have any foundation at all. I managed to clear up some of what my teacher told me in Analytical Chemistry by reading a book. I thought it would be easier in other classes, but it wasn't exactly so.
Among them, NMR was the most impressive.Analytical Chemistry is based on Wu University's "Instrumental Analysis" course and is taught by our chemistry faculty.Since it is a basic course, it is inevitable that the lecture will be relatively shallow, but in fact, not only a course like this introducing a particular technology will inevitably be relatively shallow.However, in Instrumental Analysis, taught by a biophysics teacher, I felt like I was listening to another technology, and there was a big difference in the introduction of the basics of principles.For example, in Instrument Analysis, the change of magnetization intensity is illustrated in the following figure, and the longitudinal relaxation (spin-lattice relaxation) is the process of establishing magnetization intensity in the direction of static magnetic field.The problem is that the nuclear magnetization intensity is not discussed in this way in Analytical Chemistry class. When a new understanding has been accepted, it will be difficult to accept the new content suddenly.
Both of these statements are true, of course, but it is difficult to relate the two because different teachers teach them in different ways, and I believe that understanding the relationship between the two will necessarily lead to a deeper understanding of the content.
This semester may seem like a waste of time taking classes with repetitive content, but not only can you review it and see if you understand it, but you can also look at it from a different perspective through the teacher.
Another interesting thing is paramagnetic resonance (ESR).It is similar to the principle of NMR and is absorbed by the level splitting of spin magnetic moments in a magnetic field, but ESR is electronic and NMR is nuclear.ESR also has similar numbers of electrons at high and low energy levels, as well as longitudinal relaxation and transverse relaxation.This leads to a comparison between ESR and NMR, resulting in the following problems.
When speaking about ESR, the teacher mentioned the broadening of the spectral line. Among them, the broadening of life is due to the high energy level of the electron. According to the uncertainty principle, there must be a certain width.In NMR, the teacher didn't talk about spectral line widening, but it's not possible to compare it with ESR. Is there a similar reason for NMR?
At the beginning of the class has been thinking, why so many teachers speak the same technology, always no teacher can speak the problem very clear and comprehensive?But now I think, in fact, there is no way, any technology can be said as a separate course, so it is difficult to speak a technology in such a short period of time very comprehensive, then different teachers will have different priorities.In order to obtain comprehensive information, I am afraid that it is only up to you to find more comprehensive information on the relevant aspects and accept different perspectives to compare and reflect on the relevant aspects, and then go further.It is possible that the content that I don't understand before will suddenly open up after another explanation. Although this opportunity is often encountered, the only thing that can be certain is that it will not come to me when I don't want to do anything!
