One of the core mechanisms of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of diseases is to remotely regulate the body function by stimulating specific parts (acupoints). Modern anatomical studies have not yet clarified the existence of specific structural basis of meridians, but revealed that the remote effect of acupuncture stimulation can be realized through somatosensory autonomic nerve reflex. According to the somatic distribution characteristics of these nerves, the anti-inflammatory effect of low-intensity electroacupuncture stimulation at different parts can be predicted.
Studies have shown that for the vagal adrenal anti-inflammatory pathway induced by acupuncture stimulation, there are body site selectivity and acupoint specificity. The relative specificity of this acupoint is related to the site-specific distribution of Prokr2 nerve fibers. In addition, the intensity and depth of acupuncture are important factors affecting the specificity of acupoints.
The researchers believe that these findings enrich the modern scientific connotation of body surface stimulation therapy such as acupuncture and provide an important scientific basis for clinical optimization of acupuncture stimulation parameters and inducing different autonomic reflex, so as to treat specific diseases (such as inflammatory storm).
