The micro continental blocks separated from the continent preserve many geological records, such as continental extension and rupture, submarine expansion and micro continental block proliferation, which provides an important window for understanding the paleogeographic evolution of the continental margin. Recently, assistant researcher Chen wenhuang, researcher Yan Yi and their collaborators of the discipline group of continental margin tectonics, Key Laboratory of marginal sea and ocean geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have made new progress in the study of paleogeography of the continental margin of South China. Related research was published in geotectonics.
The Palawan micro continental block located in the southeast margin of the South China Sea is considered to be a micro continental block separated from the South China continental margin with the seabed expansion of the South China Sea in the early Oligocene Miocene. Therefore, the Palawan micro continental block is of great significance to understand the tension fracture process and paleogeographic pattern of the South China continental margin. In the past, some studies have shown the provenance relationship between the Palawan micro block and the northern continental margin of the South China Sea, but due to the lack of direct stratigraphic evidence, it is not clear when and where the Palawan micro block was separated from the southern continental margin.
Because the fracture unconformity of the northern continental margin of the South China Sea has the characteristics of time-varying and younger to the southwest, a feasible method is to identify the Conjugate Continental Margin of the Palawan micro continental block through the comparison of fracture unconformity. In addition, little is known about the source and transport path of sediments during the rifting period on the continental margin of South China before the expansion of the South China Sea, especially whether the sediments denuded from the interior of the Cathaysian Block can cross the continental margin to Palawan?
In order to solve the above problems, the researchers conducted detailed biostratigraphy and provenance research on the rift sequence Panas Pandian formation in the south central part of Palawan, and obtained the following understanding:
The analysis of planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils shows that the sedimentary age of Panas Pandian formation is the earliest middle Eocene Oligocene (47.7-32.9 MA). Based on this result and the oldest age (~ 32 MA) of Nido limestone in the post rift sequence, the fracture unconformity of Palawan micro continental block can be limited to 33 – 32 ma. This time is close to the fracture unconformity time of the Pearl River Mouth Basin (~ 32 MA) and its southern IODP u1435 station (~ 34 MA), indicating that the Palawan micro landmass has a conjugate relationship with the Pearl River Mouth Basin. In addition, the trace fossils helminthopsis and benthic foraminifera in deep-water cementitious crust in Panas Pandian formation indicate the land slope environment in the water depth from middle semi deep sea to deep sea (> 500 m).
The analysis of trace elements, Nd isotopes, heavy mineral assemblages and detrital zircon U-Pb ages shows that the Panas Pandian formation has two main source areas: the near source Mesozoic basin basement uplift and the far source Cathaysian Block. This implies that a river similar to the Northeast tributary of the Pearl River existed in the middle Eocene (47.7 – 42.1 MA), and can cross the South China continental margin to transport the sediments from the interior of the Cathaysian Block to the south central part of Palawan on the continental slope. This sediment transport path indicates that the South China continental margin was a wide rift zone with low topographic gradient before the submarine expansion of the South China Sea.
The study provides important evidence for the paleogeographic location of the Palawan micro block and the topographic characteristics of the continental margin of South China before the expansion of the South China Sea, and implies that deep-sea basins were not developed between the Pearl River Mouth Basin and the Palawan micro block in most periods before the submarine expansion of the South China sea.
