The day before yesterday afternoon, suddenly came the news of Professor Wu Xiangzhou's death. For two days, my mind was hard to calm down. I'd like to express my sorrow in this essay.

Professor Wu Xiangzhou and I don't have any academic connections. We know each other by academic chance. This essay only talks about our academic contacts with him.

I can't remember the year when Professor Xiangzhou and I got familiar with each other, but it must have been between 1996 and 2000. From 1995 to 2000, I worked with Zhao Minfu, a professor of Chinese ancient poetry, and began to study Chinese ancient poetry.

Professor Xiangzhou gave me some books. The earliest one is Song poetry and poetry of Tang Dynasty published by Peking University Press. The subtitle of this book is "on the position and role of song and poetry in the creation of Tang poetry". When I sent it to you, it was titled "brother Xiaoou Huicun and correction: Xiangzhou Fengyu in the summer of 2000". The book was published in May 2000. That is to say, he gave it to me soon after it was published. This book is mentioned because it reflects Professor Xiangzhou's major academic turn. This book is the result of participating in Professor Minli's project. Professor Xiangzhou did not forget his chance of academic transformation and mentioned it on many occasions. This is rare for heroes who have become famous in the academic world.

Professor Xiangzhou is full of confidence in his academic achievements and academic path, but he is also open-minded, affirming others, making friends and thirsty for talents. This is very important for leaders of academic activities. I first felt this at the Symposium on the relationship between Chinese poetry and music held by Capital Normal University in 2002. In addition to the traditional researchers of literature and history, many scholars of music and art participated in the conference. The conference was jointly held by the China Poetry Research Center of Capital Normal University and the Journal of literature and art research. In 2002, literary research published the written talks of this academic conference. The authors of the article are: Zhao Minli, Chao Gejin (Institute of nationalities, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences), Cui Xian (Institute of music, Chinese Academy of Arts), Kang Baocheng (Professor of Chinese Department of Sun Yat sen University, famous drama historian, my primary school), Luo di (Zhejiang Institute of Arts, famous dramatist, musician), Xu Zhigang (Senior brother of Professor Min Li and I in Chinese Department of Liaoning University), and sun Mingjun( Professor Xiangzhou's classmates and friends, Chinese Department of Tsinghua University, Yao Xiaoou, Wu Xiangzhou. At the beginning and end of the list are the planners and organizers of the conference, and the rest are experts in the field of literature and art. The editor's note by pen Tan said:

The Symposium on the relationship between Chinese poetry and music was jointly held in Beijing from April 20 to 22, 2002 by the editorial department of this journal and the Chinese Poetry Research Center of Capital Normal University. More than 40 experts and scholars from universities and scientific research institutions all over the country discussed the nature of music in Chinese poetry, the relationship between the development of poetry and music, the emergence of music and dance poetry and social activities, the internal relationship between poetry and music and social life. During the discussion, scholars from poetry theory and music theory broke the disciplinary boundaries and made academic exchanges and case introduction on the relationship between poetry and music and the relationship between Chinese and foreign poetry and music from the perspective of poetry and music. We all believe that this kind of interdisciplinary academic exchange is extremely valuable and worthy of attention. Among the authors of the above written talks, I invited brother Kang Baocheng and Mr. Luo Di, researcher chaogejin and Professor Xu Zhigang were invited by Minli, and researcher Cui Xian and Professor Sun Mingjun were definitely invited by Xiangzhou. Xiangzhou's first contribution to the foundation of Yuefu society is well known, but he never takes pride in himself. Among many people, Professor Minli's guidance is mentioned from time to time. He also said more than once that brother Xiaoou was the only participant in the first academic conference of Yuefu (including its prelude, the Symposium on the relationship between poetry and music). He said this, not including himself and Professor Zhao Minli. In fact, they are the people who have paid the most for the academic activities of contemporary Yuefu school.

The academic path of Professor Xiangzhou and I are not exactly the same, but he can seek common ground while reserving differences, and he is kind to me. The unhappiness in getting along with others is often hidden in his own heart. I think maybe that's one of the reasons for his health.

Professor Xiangzhou is a person with academic ambition and strong organizational ability. Nowadays, there are a lot of people in the academic circle, but few people, such as Professor Xiangzhou, have the ability to do both. In private, he talked to me about whether he was willing to take the leadership position of a university in Beijing. He felt that the transfer from Capital Normal University had a great impact on his academic career, so he gave up the opportunity that others thought he could not get. I have feelings when I say this. When I was young, I also had the opportunity to engage in politics, but I thought it was too different from my own interests, so I decided to give up. Different from Professor Xiangzhou, he once served as secretary of the general branch and head of the United Front Work Department of the College of Arts of Capital Normal University for many years, and has made great efforts in this aspect. His inner entanglement is human nature. I think his value lies in not being an official for profit. His ideal is to use more resources to make greater contributions to the academic cause under the current system. The huge difference between ideal and reality, for a person with rich feelings, has great harm, perhaps this is a reason for Professor Xiangzhou's premature death.
