A large-scale air pollution survey conducted by a Chinese and British research team of more than 150 researchers in Beijing shows that Beijing's air quality has improved significantly in the past few years as a result of the clean air action, a statement issued by the University of Birmingham said recently.
"China UK joint research project on air pollution and human health in megacities in China" was funded by research funds from China and the UK. Researchers from University of Birmingham, Manchester University, University of Cambridge, Peking University and Tsinghua University conducted in-depth research on the causes and health effects of air pollution in Beijing by using new observation technologies and models.
Professor Roy Harrison of Birmingham University, a leading scientist of the project, told Xinhua that the air pollution in Beijing often changes due to the influence of weather conditions. In order to more accurately analyze the effect of emission reduction on air quality changes, the team used sophisticated instruments to observe a number of local indicators related to air quality for a long time, so as to conduct in-depth analysis.
According to the report recently released by the team, the measured emission fluxes of major air pollutants in the center of Beijing, including fine particulate matter, volatile organic compounds and black carbon, are lower than the previous estimates; PM2.5 produced by biomass and coal combustion outside the center of Beijing will be brought into the city by air masses, which will affect the air quality of the city; reducing ammonia emissions can significantly reduce the PM2.5 concentration.
They also found that cooking oil emissions are also one of the sources of fine particulate matter in urban areas, indicating that Beijing may need to control such local pollution sources more strictly; in addition, although road traffic is not the main source of primary particulate matter in Beijing, it is an important source of nitrogen oxides. Primary particulate matter refers to the liquid or solid particulate matter directly discharged into the environment by the emission source.
Harrison said that the method developed by the team can eliminate the influence of weather factors, so as to more accurately estimate the impact of emission changes on air quality, "and we found that [Beijing] has made great progress in improving air quality, especially in reducing emissions of a variety of monitored pollutants.".
The researchers believe that through these rich data sets, they can better understand how emissions, chemistry and meteorology interact to determine the causes of haze in Beijing in different seasons.
Professor Shi Zongbo of Birmingham University, the project coordinator, said that the research program has strengthened Sino British cooperation, promoted the training of young scientists, gained new scientific knowledge and experience of large-scale international cooperation, achieved mutual benefit and win-win results between China and Britain, and put forward suggestions to help citizens take personal actions to reduce air pollution exposure and improve their quality of life.
Harrison said that the cooperation with Chinese researchers has achieved good results, their research level is very high, and the two sides have benefited a lot from the exchange of scientific research work.
