In the list of "double first-class" construction in Liaoning Province, Northeast University of Finance and economics and China Medical University have four disciplines selected, tied for the third place in Liaoning Province. In the "double first-class" construction list of Hebei Province, Yanshan University is positioned as the "first-class university" construction unit, three disciplines are positioned as "world-class discipline construction", and four disciplines are positioned as "domestic first-class discipline construction".

At present, there are many university rankings in China, some of which are directly classified as "research type", "research teaching type", "teaching research type" and "teaching type" according to the university rankings. To be honest, I don't know how to "define" university ranking personnel like this, but I remember that some colleges of Northeastern University don't even have master's degree programs, mainly giving lectures to undergraduates. Why are they classified as "Research-oriented" units. On the contrary, some universities do research in some disciplines, such as the State Key Laboratory of metastable materials of Yanshan University, which is the research unit with the "national prefix". In terms of basic research strength, it should also rank on the top in China. In addition, the "departments" pilot units are popular in domestic colleges and universities. At present, the pilot reform mainly focuses on the "title" evaluation. Schools delegate power to colleges, let them set their own targets, let outstanding people stand out. However, as far as I know, I haven't heard of a pilot "Research-oriented" College in China.

Why do I suddenly think that domestic universities are trying to build "Research-oriented" colleges? My idea is very simple. For ordinary universities, what they can strive for is "first-class disciplines". In the process of first-class discipline comparison, we mainly value the scientific research strength of this discipline. We say that the specialty of XX university is very strong, it must be because this university has made good achievements in scientific research. Therefore, for ordinary universities, it is very likely that the development of disciplines is not balanced. Most of the majors are mainly teaching and supplemented by scientific research, while some of the majors have done very well in scientific research due to their traditional advantages. Now "double first-class" construction opportunities are in front of them. For them, we should let these influential majors or colleges become "Research-oriented", so that they can make better achievements and train them to become strong competitors of national "first-class disciplines".

How to build "research type" college? My initial thoughts are as follows:

1) The construction of "Research-oriented" colleges needs to liberate the vast majority of young teachers from "teaching". In Central South University, lecturers are not qualified to give lectures. What these people have to do is to devote themselves to scientific research and make use of the characteristics of young people, such as strong learning ability, quick response ability and strong hands-on ability, to make them make more breakthrough achievements. In this regard, Central South University has a "school level assessment" system for lecturers at the end of the year. Good and bad are the same, so as to reduce their ideological burden and economic pressure and make more influential achievements.

2) The construction of "Research-oriented" colleges should be given more powerful support in the process of "postdoctoral" personnel recruitment. During my several years working in Australia, my biggest experience is that the number of postdoctoral and doctoral students recruited by the "bullish" research group is almost the same, and their performance is the best. Many people and I have exchanged views on research achievements. There is no research group that expects "doctoral students" to make more and better academic achievements. On the contrary, postdoctoral groups may contribute more than half of the academic achievements of the whole school.

3) "Research type" colleges need to be equipped with more "researcher" positions. In universities, most people like to choose a series of professors, especially in the future research-oriented universities, which are likely to adopt the "long-term employment" series of professors. On the contrary, there seems to be very few people in the "researchers" series. I remember that in the past, there were dozens of "Professor" posts in Northeast University, but only a few "researcher" posts a year. Of course, at Tsinghua University, it seems that the "researcher" series of teachers have accounted for more than half of the total teaching staff. As a top research university in China, our "Research-oriented" college can follow suit.

4) "Research type" colleges need more support in large-scale equipment. After returning home, everyone told me how important "platform" is. In fact, what is a platform? In my opinion, it's just the strength of hardware and software. In terms of software strength, it is the school's database resources. In terms of hardware strength, it is mainly the key "expensive" equipment. In addition, a few days ago, a friend chatted with me. A university has a device that can be used to do many experiments. However, a teacher in this school wanted to use the equipment, but the equipment manager refused to use the equipment because it was only for Undergraduates' internship. For the "Research-oriented" college, the equipment of the college is not only for people to visit, but also for them to run.

5) "Research oriented" colleges need more independent decision-making power. For ordinary universities, I believe that it is impossible to build all colleges into "Research-oriented" colleges all at once. Therefore, their establishment is just like the "Shenzhen" Special Economic Zone, which needs the support of the school in many policies, so that they have the opportunity to make different achievements, so as to drive other places to make good achievements.
